What to write in a Valentine card

In this fast-paced world of emails, texts and social media – and with no emoji to save the day – it can be quite the struggle to write from the heart when we’re a nation that’s out of practice. But we’re also a nation that spends a whopping £53 million* on Valentine’s cards every year. What you decide to write in a Valentine’s Card is ultimately up to you, but our experts here at Love Hearts have come together to offer some pointers.

If you’re a new couple, don’t go overboard

There’s no magic length of time when it comes to expressing your feelings to that new person in your life. However, writing your undying love to someone you’ve only just met might scare them off a little bit. If you’re both in agreement that your first date was a ‘love at first sight’ situation then go for it but if things are still in their early stages you might want to rethink your instincts. Our advice is to keep it short and sweet – let them know that you’re glad you met but don’t wax too lyrical about it. Example lines could be:

Happy Valentine’s Day, gorgeous

Looking forward to celebrating our first Valentine’s together

I’m so glad we met. Here’s to today, and lots more Valentine’s to come!

You had me at Hello

Quotes on love

Do you love your other half but can’t find the words to truly express it? Believe it or not, you can be just as authentic and romantic with a quote – just make sure it resonates with the two of you. Maybe it’s a line from a book, film or song you both love. Perhaps it’s something you said to each other in your dating days. Or maybe (and this is probably the easiest route) a simple look on Google will deliver the quote that perfectly sums up your love story. There are a vast number of romantic quotes to choose from, here are a few of our favourites:

“Love is a friendship set to music” – Joseph Campbell

“Love is all you need” – The Beatles

“One love, one heart” – Bob Marley

“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.” – A.A Milne

Make them laugh

If declarations of love are a bit too cheesy for your liking, you might want to consider sharing a joke rather than a sonnet. Be careful not to make your jokes too immature though –after all, you might be showing these cards to your grandchildren one day! Here are a few to consider:

If you were a Transformer, you’d be Optimus FINE.

If I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put ‘U’ and ‘I’ together

Life without you is like a broken pencil…pointless

Are you a dictionary? Because you add meaning to my life

It’s hard to come up with something really heartfelt on demand, so whatever you decide to write in a Valentine’s Card, just remember to take a bit of time to think about it. Eventually it will come to you.
