Knight in shining khaki

Before we started going out together, Steve was my Sergeant when we were both in the Army.
At the time this picture was taken I had been out in the field for 7 days, I was freezing cold, wet, tired and absolutely starving! I had hardly slept and had been eating 24hour ration packs which consisted of re-hydrated awfulness.
My section, of which I was the only female, had been ordered to “dig in” which meant another trench and another cold night on stag duty. I was on my uppers (army term for knackered lol), and to my dismay I could feel my eyes watering and the dreaded tears form up – How could I lose face in front of all these men for being a weak little woman!!
And then, a mirage of wonderfulness appeared or rather wafted in the air. I didn’t want to believe it at first as surely it couldn’t be possible….. Steve had arrived in a land rover with fish and chips for us all with loads of salt and vinegar!!!
OH MY DAYS! It’s difficult to explain the total and utter gorgeousness of those fish and chips. It was totally against regulations and I later found out he had travelled 25 miles into the nearest village and kept them warm by wrapping them in his sleeping bag.
It got me through the exercise and I passed out later that year – he was and still is after 30 years, my “Knight in shining Khaki”
